Long Week

It was a long, long, long week. We had a wellness visit, and I have a big work project forcing me to put in way more than my usual hours.

Well visits and their gosh durned weight checks are enough alone to put me in a bad mood generally. We rang in this time at 17.86 lbs at 15 months, so we’ll keep plugging along and trying to find stuff he will SWALLOW.

Anyway, there is a light at the end of my tunnel. My mom, dad, and sister will be here tomorrow from down south. We’ve got first baseball games, a butterfly show, and more zoo trips to look forward to. Along with some good old fashioned hanging out and enjoying each other.

I truly want to enjoy this summer, and not spend it in anger at myself. I think that’s why I avoided blogging this week. Anything I could write was not going to set the tone I want this summer to have. We will have our wonderful summer. We’re going to MAKE it happen.

So here’s to drinks on the porch, lightning bugs, and wading pools. A family trip to Sedona, our 13th Anniversary, and trips to the park. LOVE summer!

Happy Memorial Day, folks. Remember your servicemen and women and be safe!

Busy Weekend

Despite my Friday at  3:00a.m preemie mama post, we had a full, wonderful weekend.

It wasn’t without its mishaps. First tick and first trying to walk crash, but it was full of wonderful family moments and enjoying my fellas.

I don’t feel right posting pics of other people’s kids without permission, but there was an amazing group hug between Drake, the birthday boy, and another little girl that was so sweet it almost made me forget about the germs. 🙂

So we have serious contemplation of the swing, falling asleep with our joint custody dog (MIL works out of town most of the week, so we share her toy poodle), exploring the park pavilion at the party, first cut, and first tick.

The cut was from face planting into the corner of his dresser. Why is kid’s furniture made with sharp edges??! The tick from our Mother’s Day adventure out to Great-Uncle’s farm.

I am definitely being told by the universe that I cannot expect to protect this child from everything, and it shouldn’t stop us from enjoying daily adventures.

Word of advice, when someone tells you to use nail polish to remove a tick do not select the dark purple one.

Multiple layers, gloves, and blankets shouldn’t be necessary for a Mid-May birthday party. There are definitely times I miss Louisiana…

Haunted

Every time I shifted, the steady whoosh-whoosh of the fetal monitor would disappear. I was so scared to go to sleep, afraid that the tiny little man inside would disappear.

The look on the triage nurse’s face at L&D of the hospital I was transferred to just before she slapped an oxygen mask on me and propped me up on my left side.

An entire night of trying to convince the medical team that I was having “constipation pains” and not contractions. I refused to make a sound, believing that would make him be born sooner.

We’re supposed to go to a birthday party today at 1pm. This little boy was born 3 days after my original due date and the differences between the two boys and their development…

Oh I know I’m not supposed to compare, and I can remember that so easily in the comfort of my formerly RSV isolated home.

But I am sitting up, awake, terrified of a 1 year old’s birthday party with other full-term kids. How stupid is that?

With a million “what ifs” running through my head. The main one being, “What if he gets sick?”

But we can’t live in our safe bubble forever…

Ask, Don’t Stare

While checking out my newsfeed over my morning coffee, I came across this gem from Bar Bumpers.**

Says any parent with medical equipment or a unique kid.

**I asked permission from Bar Bumpers prior to posting.

We have always used the sleep sacks to keep Drake warm in his “nite-nite” shoes, but I absolutely love these. Bar Bumpers will custom embroider a bar bumper and shoe covers.

I should take a picture of our changing table, cradle, and crib to show the damage that is wrought on wooden furniture by a kicky baby with an large metal bar.

I love the craftiness and the practicality of these sets, but the message of this one is what really stopped me in my tracks this morning.

Last summer, Drake was on his last 2 rounds of casting for his clubfoot correction just as we came out of RSV isolation post- NICU discharge. I was still in the fragile, guilty new preemie mom stage. We decided to go to a popular brunch restaurant early one morning. Of course, I felt like people were staring me down as I carried my newborn-sized infant with a hip to toe cast on his left leg. The looks you get make you feel like social services is going to jump out and grab your child any minute. After casting, the Ponseti correction method continues with 23/7 bracing for three months.

Ask, don’t stare, ladies and gentleman. Most parents are going to be willing to educate you if asked politely and having a good day.

I love these whimsical boot and bar covers. I really need to reach out and see if she’s willing to ship to the US.

You can view all the Bar Bumper offerings on their website  http://www.barbumpers.co.uk/.

Love, love, love the site motto, also. “Bringing fun and fashion into the world of Boots and Bars. “

Spring Adventures

In the three weeks since we’ve had RSV restrictions lifted, we’ve had a sneak peek of the summer adventures ahead.

So glad we could give him the healthy start RSV isolation afforded, but venturing out as a family is pretty awesome. Last night my husband needed to buy a gift for work, and we just picked up and went as a family after dinner. Too fun.

I’m sure the novelty of family outings will fade with time, but I hope we can always remember the joy of getting to venture out together as a trio.

I will confess that I used sanitizing wipes on the swing before I’d let Gammy put him in it. Once a preemie mama… 🙂
